  • Dig Day infrastructure support, including CRM software and web operations to recruit, organize and prepare volunteers. Other Dig Day funding needs include rare plant and environmental compliance studies and tools procurement

  • Better trails (e.g., more accessible, durable and sustainable conditions) for park visitors seeking high-quality recreational experiences. Trails are integral to nature-based fitness and wellness activities, as well as creative or conservation-based activities

  • Advocacy to improve access and expand circulation, connector and loop options for more trail users, especially off-road cyclists and park visitors with accessibility needs

  • Change in use (CIU) evaluation to improve access ratios across the trail user groups. Funding needs can include environmental impact studies (CEQA) and rare plant surveys, as well trail modification or reroute costs

  • Responsible Recreation education and bike bell giveaways to improve awareness of all trail user groups and each other’s potential impact on flora, fauna, wildlife and watershed resources

  • Recruit, mobilize, and prepare volunteers to support Shared Stewardship projects at Mount Diablo State Park while also advocating for:

    • Better trails for all park visitors, focusing on accessibility, sustainability and ecological preservation

    • Greater trails access for off-road cyclists (MTB & Gravel Bike) and persons with disabilities or accessibility needs

    • Trail etiquette education and awareness (e.g., responsible recreation)

  • Since launching in October 2023, MDTA has worked with California State Parks (CSP) to build a sustainable and impactful Shared Stewardship model.

    CSP reviews, approves and manages all Dig Day trail maintenance projects. MDTA recruits and educates volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to help maintain trails at Dig Days using proven techniques. The impact so far includes:

    • 11 miles of trail improvements

    • Nearly 1,000 volunteers involved

    • Over 5,500 hours of volunteer-powered trail maintenance at Dig Days

    2. Greater access: Propose that more singletrack trails be evaluated for change in use (CIU) to multi-use bike-friendly, which can improve 1) circulation and connector options and 2) general safety conditions (e.g., get more MTB & Gravel Bike cyclists off the roadway)


      Currently, hikers/runners and equestrians can access 100% and 99.5%, respectively, of Mount Diablo State Park’s 52.5 miles of singletrack trails.

      In contrast, off-road cyclists (MTB & Gravel Bike) can access only 18% of singletrack trails.

    3. Responsible recreation: Promote trail etiquette education and bike bell giveaways to improve all trail user groups’ awareness of each other and their potential impact on flora, fauna, wildlife and watershed resources
