Who We Are
Established in October 2023, Mount Diablo Trails Alliance aims to serve as a long-term partner of California State Parks and related stakeholders at Mount Diablo State Park, helping bridge gaps between conservation objectives, recreation goals, and resource constraints.
Our trail stewardship, access and Responsible Recreation initiatives focus on Better Trails (e.g., more accessible and durable) and Greater Access (e.g., expanded circulation, connector and loop options for off-road cyclists and more ADA-compliant trails for park visitors with accessibility needs).
Mission
Build a sustainable Shared Stewardship model helping California State Parks achieve the trail-related goals of the 2016 Road and Trail Management Plan (RTMP) for Mount Diablo State Park:
Operate a more regular trail maintenance program, adhering to the standards and techniques prescribed in the California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Trails Handbook
Improve relative trail access ratios across the main trail user groups by expanding circulation, connector and loop options for off-road cyclists through the change-in-use (CIU) process
Improve accessibility options with the construction of ADA-compliant trails
Evaluate non-system trails for removal or adoption to reduce impact on ecological and cultural resources
To power the Shared Stewardship model, we recruit and educate volunteers to participate in trail maintenance projects called Dig Days, which have evolved to become an integral component to achieving the 2016 RTMP’s trail maintenance goals.
California State Parks staff plan, approve and manage the Dig Day projects and related operations, while also providing essential tools and equipment.
Through the Shared Stewardship model, volunteers from all ages and backgrounds work together and learn from one another to help support and advance the 2016 RTMP-based policy goals and the broader California State Parks mission:
Protect the environment and biodiversity while providing high-quality outdoor recreational opportunities for park visitors.
