Your Voice Can Support a New State Park & Greater Open Space Access
California State Parks (CSP) is hosting workshops on Saturday, September 20 (in person) and Tuesday, September 30 (virtual). CSP will outline the draft vision statement for the classification process of the Alameda Tesla property and two concept alternatives. A public comment session will be part of both workshops.
More event details and related registration web-links are presented at the end of this blog.
What’s the Ask?
We invite you to attend one of these two workshops to voice your opinion about the classification of the Alameda Tesla property.
Special interest groups want to make this future park unit a Reserve, which could restrict or limit access for a lot of recreational users (e.g., off-road cyclists and equestrians).
We need your support to make Alameda Tesla welcoming for all state park visitors and trail user groups. Decisions made here can impact access policies in other park units across the state.
What are the Classification Options?
Mount Diablo Trails Alliance encourages the community to voice support for either a State Park or State Recreational Area classification for the Alameda Tesla property. For each of these classifications, we advocate for the addition of special sub-unit protection zones to restrict all park visitors from entering areas that have sensitive ecological and cultural resources.
We believe that this two-tiered approach balances conservation and recreation goals, and it aligns with the mission of California State Parks:
“To provide for the health, inspiration, and education of the people of California by helping to preserve the state's extraordinary biological diversity, protecting its most valued natural and cultural resources, and creating opportunities for high-quality outdoor recreation.”
Mount Diablo Trails Alliance opposes the Reserve classification option for the Alameda Tesla property, as it places unnecessary restrictions across the entirety of the park, limiting much needed outdoor opportunities, especially for those residing in and around Livermore, Tracy, Stockton, Modesto and the surrounding Central Valley.
Your voice matters. Help ensure that California’s public lands welcome the broadest base of users, while protecting our natural, cultural, and recreational resources for generations to come.
